Education

Began his religious studies at Masjid al-Haram, Makkah al-Mukarramah at the age of four. He studied under Syeikh Haji Omar Sembawa and Mohammad Jamaluddin bin Mohammad Al-Amir, the Mufti of Makkah, for 12 years.

Career

He received the warrant of the Melaka Resident and was appointed by the Governor of Melaka as Kadi of the State of Melaka on 19 February 1918 / 5 Jamadil Awwal 1336H. He willingly relinquished the post of Kadi on 14 November 1919 / 20 Safar 1338H.

He served as Imam and Khatib of Masjid Kampung Hulu from 25 May 1923, and was officially appointed Khatib, Imam and Trustee of the mosque on 4 October 1923. He took over the duties of Mufti of Melaka from 1928 after the passing of the previous Mufti, Tuan Haji Ahmad bin Abdul Rauf.

He was named the first Mufti of Melaka on 18 March 1948 / 7 Jamadil Awwal 1367H, and was officially installed as Mufti of Melaka in April 1960 with the establishment of the Melaka Islamic Religious Council.

Contributions

He founded the religious school of Masjid Kampung Hulu, named Madrasah Al-Aliyah, and visited many places and villages to teach religious knowledge. He was widely learned and renowned for his firmness in upholding Islamic law, as well as a skilled astronomer (falak) and a master of Quranic recitation in the seven modes of qira’at.

Date of Passing

He passed away at 10.00 a.m. on Friday, 10 June 1960 / 15 Zulhijjah 1379H at the age of 76, and was laid to rest at the Muslim Cemetery of Bukit Senjuang, Melaka.
